A brass bristle grill brush is recommended by some manufactures of porcelain coated grill grates. Brass is a softer more forgiving bristle that does not scratch a porcelain surface as easily. Brass bristles do tend to wear out faster then their stainless steel counterparts due to the softer nature of the bristle.
When using any bristled grill brush they are most effective when little to no pressure is applied. The bristles should glide across the top of the grates with only the tips touching. When pressure is applied not only do you smash the bristles down, you end up with only the smooth side of the wires and the plastic top of the brush rubbing against your grates. Which is very ineffective.
We have found that holding the brush a a slightly sideways to the grates seems to work best. That way the rows of bristles will not line up with the grates and cause the brush to fall in. The triangular shaped brushed with the round bristle layout seems to be the best grill brush for the V shaped porcelain coated grill grates that are so common today.
