Replacing your gas grills igniter

This is one of the most common problems with gas grills. There are two different types of igniter’s electric and manual, and the first step is determining which type you have. If your igniter is electric, when it was functioning properly you could hold the button in and it would make a tick-tick-tick sound repeatedly. A manual igniter when functioning properly you push in once and it makes a pop sound, and if your grill did not light you need to push it in again.

Electric Igniters: The most common problem with this type of igniter is the battery going dead. So before you purchase a replacement igniter check the battery, most of these you would unscrew the base of the button on the control panel to access a single AA battery. On others (including the type where you hold the control knob in) the battery is mounted on the backside of the panel somewhere.

Replacing The Igniter Button: The first step is removing your old button, most will have a nut behind the panel that you will need to unscrew. Others will unscrew from the front side of the panel. Once the button is removed, if the wire(s) on the back can be removed remove them. At this point (if you have removable wires) you may want to hook the new button up to test the old electrodes. If they spark you will not need to replace them. Place the replacement button into the control panel and tighten the nut.
