So you have heard about grill brush danger and you want to know if your grill brush is going to kill you? The chances of that are very slim. There is a danger hidden in your typical grill brush though. In fact back in 2012 the CDC actually issued a warning about it.
What’s the danger?
Grill brush danger is caused by the metal bristles breaking off or pulling out of the head. The small thin metal wires can get stuck in the grates of the grill and get transferred into your food. When that food is eaten the bristle can get lodged in your digestive tract causing major medical issues. Made worse by the fact that they are so small they are hard to find in an X-ray.
Chances of that happening are slim and none right?
It’s not very likely but it is more likely than you think. According to published news reports between 2002 and 2014 1,698 cases were reported. Another story says between 2012 and 2017 almost 1600 cases were reported. That lands us between 3 to 5 cases a week of this unlikely event happening. Not sure if these numbers are just the U.S. or worldwide.
Is there some guy in an office somewhere who’s only job is to call around to every hospital to find this out
My grill brush is going to kill me. I need to throw it out right now!
Not so fast. If your grill brush is in good condition just inspect the bristles after every use. Look for some bristles that stick out further or are bent throw it away. Worn bristles, better safe than sorry, throw it out. For a dirty brush clean it with some degreaser and then inspect it. When your stuck using a beat up grill brush inspect your grates after every use.
Whew, I feel better now that I averted that tragedy. Hmm…how do I clean my grill now?

What is not shown above is the wooden paddle type grill cleaning tool. This is newer to the market. I am not sure that I am sold on it yet. It’s just another option to consider.

Be careful with nylon and hot grills. I recommend coiled wire, stone blocks, wooden scrapers or even chainmail.
