How to grill a whole potato is one of the simplest things you can learn to grill. It will turn out very similar to a baked potato out of your oven. Typically it is one of the first things that is not meat that you learn to grill. Probably because it is a great side when you are cooking steaks and can be grilled at the same time.
Items that you will need to grill a whole potato:
Potato, heavy duty tinfoil , Fork and Italian Salad Dressing, or Butter or Olive Oil.

Taking a cleaned potato, stick it with a fork do this 15 or 20 times all the way around the potato. You don’t have to stick it all the way through, maybe a quarter of the way in to the fork is just fine.

Then take a piece of foil large enough to wrap the entire potato. Place the potato on the foil and add either a tablespoon or two of the salad dressing (I never measure but you can feel free to), or olive oil directly on the potato. Wrap the foil tightly around the potato.
Place the wrapped potato on the grill off the heat. Medium heat for between an hour and hour and a half depending on the size of the potato. If you are a thermometer happy person: a potato is fully cooked and fluffy when the inside reaches approximately 205 degrees. Most people simply stick a fork in them: When the Fork goes in with minimal pressure the potato is done. This can be done right through the foil.

Note: If using butter never put the wrapped potato over direct heat, the butter will burn quickly.
A grilled whole potato will taste like a regular baked potato but will not have that crispy skin with this technique.
